The Villa Basilica Forestry Consortium at the first European Conference of Small-scale Forest Owners
The first European Conference of Small-scale Forest Owners Organizations was held at the FAO headquarters in Rome from May 20th to 22nd. The conference was organized as part of the European Smurf project, funded by the Horizon 2020 program and aimed at supporting organizations that manage small-scale forest owners.
“Our small forest plots are finally at the center of so much attention,” explains President Giovanni Ciniero, who represented the Villa Basilica Consortium. “Our experience,” Ciniero continues, “spanning over 10 years has been selected, along with 30 others from across Europe, to give voice and visibility to the critical issue of private forest management. Not only in our country but across the continent, these are largely small, divided properties. This is the first time that a topic so rarely featured in national public debate, yet so crucial to the environment, safety, and economy of the region, has found a prestigious forum for discussion and discussion at the international level”.
Forests, in fact, represent approximately a third of Europe’s and Italy’s land area, over half of Tuscany’s, and the vast majority in mountainous and partially mountainous municipalities. Lucca is the most heavily forested province in all of Tuscany, a consequence of the abandonment of agricultural and pastoral land use and brings with it various environmental risks.
The Villa Basilica Forestry Consortium and its network of local consortia were present, bringing their most innovative experiences: the ability to bring together small businesses in the agricultural and artisanal sectors, the construction of several second-level forestry networks capable of coordinating their respective forestry programs, the management of short-chain wood-to-energy heating systems, the production of dried wood chips and wood chips, and the most recent initiative in forest therapy and social agriculture.
“All activities that can enhance our forests and lands must be given space and opportunity to express themselves. The forests of Lucca and Tuscany are increasingly attracting interests and sensitivities, requiring balance and mutual respect. Our forests,” Ciniero concludes, “are numerous and rich, and we need to give space to all the functions they perform or can perform, for the environment and for our society.”
